100 Strangers Project

Why would I want to photograph 100 strangers? In exploring the neighborhoods and attractions of my home town of St Louis, I found myself focusing on buildings, attractions and every day scenes. Shortly after I began, however, I realized that what truly gives a neighborhood its character is its people. It takes some courage to ask strangers for a photo though. Some days, I simply felt too introverted to approach people I didn't know. Then I stumbled upon a Digital Photography School article that encouraged photographing 100 strangers to improve one's skills. It gave tips on how to approach strangers more comfortably and was just the incentive I needed. I took the "stranger challenge". DPS recommends actually speaking with strangers and asking permission for photos. Don't hide behind a tree with a long lens! Be honest and direct. Tell the stranger what your project is about. Tell them what caught your eye and why you think their photograph will be appealing. They will likely be flattered and want to help you out. They may even ask for posing suggestions. I always thanked the subjects and offered to send them a digital image, when it seemed appropriate. Although I began with photos around St Louis, I practiced a bit when traveling as well. In the end, I was surprised to find only one person turn down my request for a photo. Unfortunately, I didn't meet my goal of 100 strangers. I stopped the project after breaking a foot and being temporarily sidelined from photo outings. I did eventually take photos of additional strangers.
