Italy is a country of south-central Europe, on a boot-shaped peninsula that extends into the Mediterranean Sea. Rome is the capital city of Italy and of the Lazio region. Popular among tourists, the city is known for its ancient Roman ruins such as the Colosseum, wonderful museums, charming piazzas, vibrant street life, and delicious food. It is also known for the country within its boundaries, Vatican City, the smallest country in the world. Pisa is one of the most famous cities in Italy, known for its leaning tower and located in the Tuscany region. Lucca is also located in the Tuscany region, in Central Italy on the Serchio River. The city of Pompeii, located in southern Italy's Campania region, was destroyed and buried in ash and pumice, due to the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. The rediscovered ruins of the ancient Roman city are near the modern city of Naples. Today it is a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of Italy's most popular tourist attractions.
